Description

These are Flash EPROM chips, in a special low profile carrier designed to replace the now defunct 2364 ROM chip, used widely in early computers, such as the Sinclair ZX80, Sinclair ZX81, Vic-20, Commodore 64 (Kernal, Basic and Character ROM), Commodore 1541 Disk Drive (DOS/Drive ROMs), and Timex-Sinclair TS1000 and TS-1500 computers.

The original 2364 ROM chip is a very unusual 24 pin ROM chip (8x8 Kbit) which can now only be programmed on very specialised EPROM programmers (due to the voltages required).  There was also a second chip, which could be used at a push (it was pinout compatible) - the Motorola MCM68764, although that chip too was discontinued many years ago.

NOTE: there was also a 28 pin version of the 2364 ROM (for example, the TMM2364P from Toshiba). Therefore ensure you need the 24 pin version (this was sold by Toshiba as the TMM2366P)!

The ROM-el 2364 Flash ROM replacement is extremely low profile, using about the same space as an original 2364 chip, whilst using a Atmel Flash chip (AT49F001AN) which can hold 1Mbit (128kB) of code. In addition, overflow addressing lines are available on the ROM-el to enable bank switching and other targeted ROM applications.

You will need to make a convertor to program this in an EPROM programmer (the chips are supplied blank) - so you will need to make a AT49F001 to 2364 pinout converter, or we can program the chips with a ROM of your choice (please supply the binary) for an additional fee of £5.

    Posted by s***1 (0) - 27/07/2021  10:54:02

Answer: We are currently out of stock - we are looking to get some new adaptors made, but it will be a little while due to the issues in China at the moment

  • Question: I want to buy this and pay the additional 5£ to have the software for my ZX81. How can I pay the 5£ (when the order display it count only the price for the EPROM + shipping). I have no binary, do you have a usable version ?

    Posted by j***i (5) - 08/02/2021  06:58:49

Answer: Ask for an Invoice after you order the item and we can add the £5. You need to let us know what ROM version you need!

  • Question: Hi can this be used as a replacement Atari 800 XL Rom (Basic) chip

    Posted by r***2 (7) - 01/05/2020  20:24:06

Answer: I do not believe so - you need a 27C128 EPROM see https://atariage.com/forums/topic/279339-anyone-know-how-to-burn-a-single-standard-os-rom/

  • Question: How can bank switching be used?

    Posted by p***o (26) - 03/05/2017  01:31:18

Answer: You have to cut some tracks - see the original project documentation at http://vic-20.de/x1541/hardware/2364.html

  • Question: can you program the ROM EL-2364 Flash EPROM chip with the ZX81 ROM binary

    Posted by d***k (2) - 06/04/2016  15:10:38

Answer: Yes we can do that - you would need to stipulate (by PM) which ZX81 ROM you prefer as there are several - cost is £5 extra

  • Question: Hi, could you program the EPROM with a diagnostic ROM for the IBM 5150 found at http://www.minuszerodegrees.net/supersoft_landmark/Supersoft%20Landmark%20ROM.htm ?

    Posted by K***o (7) - 15/02/2015  11:43:14

Answer: We can program the EL-2364 with any suitable ROM image - the problem is that there does not appear to be an original (2364) version of hte diagnostic ROM you refer to...

  • Question: can you program the ROM EL-2364 Flash EPROM chip with the ZX80 ROM binary.

    Posted by T***6 (22) - 09/02/2013  14:19:01

Answer: Yes of course - that is not an issue - we would charge an extra £5 to cover flashing the original ZX80 ROM
