Description

These are brand new replacement keyboard membranes for the Commodore Amiga A500 and A500+ Home Computer.  These membranes also suit the later C= A4000 and Escom A4000T keyboards with springs under each key)

Please note that the A500 was supplied with at least 3 different types of keyboard membrane - one version by Samsung had 2 keyboard connectors and these keyboard membranes will NOT fit.  There appear to have also been keyboards made by Cherry (with the C= key instead of the left Amiga key) and by NME (these have red Amiga keys)

However, we have worked with the manufacturers to ensure that these replacement keyboard membranes work on both the A500 and A500+ models which have a single keyboard connector - the Mitsumi membranes (part numbers 56 A619A and 56 A619B) both with and without the extra blank / international keys (ie 94 and 96 key versions).

Before ordering, please check that your model uses a Mitsumi keyboard membrane

The membrane will be sent between 2 large cardboard sheets, to keep it flat.

Apologies for the UK postage rates - as these are now classed as a medium parcel due to their length, it is expensive to send them within the UK (about £2 more expensive than sending to Europe!)

Typical of Royal Mail!

These have now been tested with the A4000 Amiga III Technologies keyboards - see
http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?71411-A4000-Amiga-III-Technologies-keyboards-NOS

There is also an interesting discussion on that thread about the support for the extra keys

The RWAP membrane fully supports both 94- (US/GB) and 96- (international) position keyboards.

You need to load an international (e.g. french) keymap to enable the "µ £" key (which is a cutout of the larger RETURN key found in 94-position keyboards).

The standard ROM keymap (US) for some odd reason supports the left-shift-cutout key "< >", even though it's not present in the standard US keyboard, and in fact assigns it the "<" and ">" symbols, but does not support the return-cutout key.

This might lead to the false impression of a membrane problem/lack of support, since it's natural to think that, since one of the cutout keys responds, the other one ought to as well, while it's actually the ROM keymap that lacks support.

Following feedback, we will not also include a small self-adhesive strengthening strip which you can attach to the back of the membrane tail (obviously not across the connectors!) should your Amiga require this.

Questions and Answers

  • Question: As to the note 'The standard ROM keymap (US) for some odd reason supports the left-shift-cutout key "< >", even though it's not present in the standard US keyboard, and in fact assigns it the "<" and ">" symbols, but does not support the return-cutout key.' - does this mean the left shift on US A500's will not work properly? Sorry it's just not clear what I should expect here...

    Posted by K***l (0) - 08/10/2017 09:26:53

Answer: I don't really understand the comment - it was posted on Amibay. Not having a US version of the A500, I just posted the message as it appears on the forum. I assume it means the extra keys on the 96 key version of the Amiga keyboard. These appear as two small extra keys - one next to the left hand SHIFT key (which according to the comment works in the US ROM as < and > even though it is unmarked) and the other is split off the bottom of the L shaped return key (which does nothing in the US ROM).
